Displayed Languages in BrainStation
A guide to understand the language a User sees across BrainStation.
Table of Contents
This article will act as a guide to understand the language a User sees across BrainStation, and how it responds to their browser, choices, and available content.
The Four Surfaces:
The displayed language of BrainStation is decided separately in four places. The first two move together; the last two are independent of them.
-
LMS Dashboard:
- This includes menus, tabs, reports, and buttons across BrainStation.
-
Course Player Interface:
- This includes the course player, navigation, labels, and module names.
-
Video Transcripts & Captions:
- This would be the transcript text and on-screen captions for a course. This language is chosen by the User from the transcript drop-down.
-
Knowledge Checks (KC):
- These are the interactive quizzes in Bigger Brains courses. The displayed language for these follows the chosen transcript language.

Transcript and caption availability is independent of this list, it depends on which caption tracks are available for each course.
How Displayed Language is Decided:
The LMS Dashboard and Course Player Interface walk a priority list top to bottom, and used the first language found.
-
A Saved Choice:
- This is the language the User previously selected.
-
The Browser Language:
- This is used on a first visit from a User when nothing is saved yet.
-
English:
- This is the final fallback if the detected language isn't supported by the surface.
The Video Transcripts, Captions, and Knowledge Checks (KC) walk a separate priority list.
-
The User's Saved Transcript Choice:
- This language choice is kept from lesson to lesson.
-
The Interface Language:
- This is used as the default the very first time, before any transcript choice is made.
-
English:
- This is used if the saved transcript choice or interface language are not available as a caption track.
What Follows the Browser & What Doesn't:
Once a User has made choices, here is what each surface tracks.

Example:
Following a Spanish-speaking User through three moments will show how these pieces fit together.
|
Moment 1 First Visit: Browser set to Spanish, no choices made yet
|
LMS Dashboard Spanish |
Course Player Interface Spanish |
|
Transcripts & Captions Spanish (default) |
Knowledge Checks Spanish (or English if unavailable) |
|
Moment 2 The User switches a transcript to Portuguese
|
LMS Dashboard Spanish (unchanged) |
Course Player Interface Spanish (unchanged) |
|
Transcripts & Captions Portuguese |
Knowledge Checks Portuguese (or English if unavailable) |
|
Moment 3 Later, the User changes their browser to French and returns to BrainStation
|
LMS Dashboard Spanish (saved choice wins) |
Course Player Interface Spanish (saved choice wins) |
|
Transcripts & Captions Portuguese (remembered) |
Knowledge Checks Portuguese (remembered) |
Please Note:
By Moment 3 the User already has saved preferences associated with their account. The browser language only fills in when nothing is stored, so switching it has no effect.
To make detection take over again, the saved language preferences would need to be cleared (for example, a fresh browser or cleared site data.)
Fallbacks & Edge Cases:
What happens when a language isn't fully available?
Unsupported Interface Language:
If the browser reports a language a surface doesn't support, that surface defaults to English.

Missing Transcript or Knowledge Check Translation:
The transcript drop-down only lists languages a given video actually has caption tracks for. If a specific Knowledge Check has no version in the chosen language, the displayed language defaults to English.
